I was thinking about how much I love clean sheets. <br />
Especially after a relaxing bubble bath. Don't we all?<br />
He may have the cleanest sheets in the house, not because clean sheets mean anything to a twelve year old, but because he is plagued with bloody noses. Many a day he awakes and as one of his older brothers puts it, "he has punched himself in the face." Today was one of those days. All the way through to the mattress pad. Poor child! <br />
I have learned a few things I would like to share from this experience:<br />
<br />
1st- Place a safety pin on the worst spots so when the sheets come out of the washer you can actually be sure the blood is removed completely. The drier will set the stains, and it is sometimes difficult especially on fitted sheets and pillow cases to be sure of their exact locations.<br />
<br />
2nd- Hydrogen peroxide is a great aid in removing blood from most fabrics. You may want to spot test on dark or high maintenance fabrics.<br />
<br />
3rd- The more the better. I basically put a little bit of everything from the cupboard on the bloody spots. Dish soap, stain remover, peroxide and I have even had my son spit on the spots if he is available. Supposably the enzymes in our spit, (the person whose blood it is), will break it down and help remove the stain also! Our bodies are amazing!!<br />
<br />
4th- I always use Pure Laundry lavender soap to wash bedding. It is amazing! Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14826836679538957047noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-34962902244594331412013-02-01T09:45:00.000-08:002013-02-01T15:04:20.502-08:00Good Night Sleep Tight...The only time I had ever heard of bed bugs was in the cute little bedtime jingle my grandmother would sometimes sing as I ran off to bed. I thought of them as fictional.<br />
<br />
As of late...at least the last few years, they are mentioned when you search hotels in the large cities, you hear of them traveling from China via cargo ships and I must admit, I always feel a bit itchy when the topic arises.<br />
<br />
In an effort to put my mind at ease, and to be pro active, I found this blend of essential oils and water on the internet @ theherbgardner.blogspot.com:<br />
<br />
Bed Bug Spray<br />
1 cup water<br />
10 drops lavender essential oil<br />
10 drops rosemary essential oil<br />
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil<br />
3 drops essential oil of clove (optional)<br />
<br />
Place in a fine mist spray bottle and shake well before using.<br />
Be sure to wear gloves when handling essential oils. Some undiluted oils can be harmful if absorbed through the skin.<br />
<br />
I keep my spray bottle near the back door. I spritz my clothing and anything else I am carrying<br />
with me as I leave home if I feel there is any chance I may be somewhere bed bugs exist.<br />
The best thing about this blend is how amazing it smells!! <br />

<br />
One of my favorite uses beyond the washing machine, for peppermint laundry soap, is to refresh stinky shoes. I was speaking to a friend the other day about how surprised she was to have her sons baseball cleats in her laundry room, with no odiferous evidence. She was musing over how many failed attempts she had at ridding her son's shoes of odor. She actually said, and I quote, "I wish I could do a commercial about your laundry soap." <br />
I had to smile, only because we have some smelly feet at our house also. It brought back an experience from several years ago. We were on a road trip, traveling by RV to Canada. We had stopped at the Mall of America and one of our sons had purchased a new pair of tennis shoes. The old pair was stashed in a shopping bag and thrown in the back of the "Big Car". After much searching for the animal that must have stowed away and died under the RV...we realized the source of the putrid odor...the old shoes. I wish I knew then what I know now!! <br />
Sprinkle peppermint laundry soap in the bottom of the offending shoe, cleat, hockey skate etc. and be rid of the odor. That simple!! Give it a try! Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14826836679538957047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-26214197158326656752012-10-30T07:00:00.000-07:002013-02-01T15:08:46.656-08:00Welcome Winter!!<br />
We had our first snow last week!<br />
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to have school cancelled.<br />
Snow days are amazing!!<br />
With the cold weather come some challenges;<br />
chapped lips and cold sores to name a few.<br />
<br />
For cold sores, dab the area a few times a day with a<br />
wet, warm black tea bag for 5 minutes. The tannins found in black tea<br />
have an anti inflammatory effect on cold sores.<br />
<br />
For chapped lips, go to bed with honey on your lips. Honey's<br />
antibacterial properties can help moisturize cracked lips and prevent infection.<br />
These ideas come from the 2013 edition of the Old Farmer's Almanac.<br />
<br />
Honey is also great to treat mild burns, for the same reasons I listed above.<br />
It s one of those super foods! Especially if you can find honey local to your area.<br />

<br />
As I ponder all the chemicals we use, not to mention inhale....as we attempt to keep things clean and orderly, I am especially bothered by the thought of the chemicals we clean the microwave with. Do they linger and attach themselves to our food? Most likely. I have always been a big believer that basic dishwashing liquid is awesome for sinks, countertops etc. I would also say it is my top choice for cleaning the microwave glass tray etc. <br />
Although, there are those random times when you open the microwave to find it completely splattered with who knows what, and it has been there who knows how long... for these times, combine 2 T lemon juice and 1 cup water in a microwave safe bowl. Heat to a boil for 2-3 minutes. Let it stand for a few more minutes to continue to moisten the mystery debris. Wipe down walls with a damp paper towel.<br />
Another of my favorite microwave tips is to place your damp (never dry, as it could catch fire) sponge in the microwave for 2 min. It helps keep it germ free.Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14826836679538957047noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-46354256206862072402012-06-05T13:11:00.001-07:002012-06-05T13:11:46.774-07:00Magic EraserAs I was vacuuming up dead moths... again ..., I was thinking that this may be the worst year ever regarding moths. There are so many things that are better living in the country, the sunsets, the quiet, racing snowmobiles around the dormant fields when fresh snow has fallen to name a few.<br />
There are also some things that are not so great... thousands of moths for starters.<br />
With the moths come the unpleasant rusty colored spots on the white woodwork.<br />
<br />
I love the product Bar Keepers Friend. It is amazing at getting scuff marks left behind by pots and pans from your white porcelain sinks. Awesome at keeping copper cookware looking pristine (I know who buys copper cookware?) It was a gift:). Also at removing the nasty moth residue. It is one of my favorite go to cleaning aids.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI3-TobBAbXzuo80ZbYfoI0SFoFyH2MzcoUngl16oRURznvdEgeKdolHBNHhWXGCRVhWSKOB3X9uNZ5tRFiGvO1sGzJpkvACsTrkokN_IOBjVPERoVUqZ6vwFlJ6teSPSr6JWGnmkqnWQ/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI3-TobBAbXzuo80ZbYfoI0SFoFyH2MzcoUngl16oRURznvdEgeKdolHBNHhWXGCRVhWSKOB3X9uNZ5tRFiGvO1sGzJpkvACsTrkokN_IOBjVPERoVUqZ6vwFlJ6teSPSr6JWGnmkqnWQ/s320/photo.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Add a minimal amount of the Bar Keepers Friend to a damp sponge (soft or abrasive side depending on the job) and it is magical.<br />

<br />
To keep your garden weed free, spread newspaper over existing weeds or bare ground(preferably no colored ink) and get wet. Cover with grass clippings! Voila!! <br />
The paper will smother whatever is underneath and eventually decompose Works like a charm!Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14826836679538957047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-44755200472175494572012-03-02T09:08:00.000-08:002012-03-02T09:08:39.398-08:00Beautiful PeopleI can't imagine a world without music! One sweet friend, made me an entire cd of "happy songs" as she called it! I have been enjoying it immensely. She is a good example of what I am musing about here today. Having grown up in the South, Country music is a part of me. As I was driving this morning, I was listening to Tim McGraw's "Beautiful People". What an inspiring song, the message is so pure. It is one of those songs that helps me keep perspective. The "list" that is sometimes so daunting, was created by me... maybe I should add things to it like: " make someone's day" or "be truly present for my loved ones, giving them my full attention". I know that time spent with family and friends is far more important and more rewarding than completing my list. I have also noticed that the dirty dishes will wait for me, no worries!! I realize I am a bit late to be making resolutions, but I am going to try to live a fuller life. Full with things of true value. I am the first to admit that we are all happier when things are neat and clean, I am not going to give up on that, just not stress about it as much! <br />
Wish me luck!Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14826836679538957047noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-37078929193321378362012-02-27T18:10:00.000-08:002012-02-27T18:10:52.279-08:00Has Spring Sprung?I am starting to see the heads of the tulips and daffodils poking through the ground. It is even worse when they stay behind on white collars.<br />
An easy trick to remove that nasty brown residue is to just wipe the bottom of your cold<br />
iron with a rag soaked in white vinegar. (full strength).<br />
Going forward, only use distilled water for steam in your iron. <br />

<br />
This is an easy solution to an annoying issue:<br />
Make a paste using vinegar and baking soda. Apply to the collar, then launder as usual.<br />

I discovered a mix the other day that is delicious.<br />
It is:<br />
4 carrots<br />
1 grapefruit (peeled)<br />
ginger - to taste<br />
This is very refreshing and the color is most amazing.<br />
Please share your favorite blends as well. <br />

I must admit I love those lazy days with family, friends and sunshine!<br />
On that rare occasion that we don't unpack as quickly as we packed, there is nothing worse than finding one of our favorite pieces of clothing stained with mildew.<br />
A green solution for this is:<br />
Make a paste of salt and lemon juice and apply it to the stain. Dry the clothes in the sun. You can repeat the process as needed. Wash the garment as usual when the mildew is fully removed.Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14826836679538957047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-65301205298675951452012-02-10T12:26:00.000-08:002012-02-10T12:26:14.300-08:00Thoughts on Whole LivingI love the "Whole Living" magazine.
These are some of the "10 thoughts on whole living" from the Feb 2012 issue;
Nourish your mind as carefully as you nourish your body.
Brisk, crisp invigorating- remember all the positive sides of winter.
Finding balance in your relationship requires all your senses.
If you feel the need to be critical, be sure the urge is coming from a place of kindness.
When you break a small bad habit, you teach yourself that you can change anything.
Prosperity begins with the assumption that there's more than enough for everyone.
Speak your mind. Unmet needs create resentment when they go unexpressed.
The new year isn't a do-over; it's an opportunity to take your next big step.
I might add also that today is the first day of the rest of your life! Make it count!Dianehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13635205782022530089noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-31506006944138742882012-02-09T12:00:00.000-08:002012-02-09T12:00:34.496-08:00"These Socks Smell Like Butt"I have noticed lately that some of the major detergent companies are promoting what we have known all along, exercise and athletic clothing need special attention. Two things stand out:
1. Exercise clothes are expensive. Our handmade soaps have NO added fillers, such as salt. These additives are destructive to athletic gear.
2. They also can smell really bad!!!
Having four sons of my own... three of whom are currently involved in athletics at a college level, I am thrilled by the results achieved with our peppermint laundry soap. No more stinky socks!
Peppermint has been used anciently by many cultures, because of its extremely useful health promoting properties. It helps the respiratory system and is an antiseptic, to name a few.Dianehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13635205782022530089noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-37941407585281485322011-11-15T15:59:00.000-08:002011-11-16T05:55:33.809-08:00How To Best Clean My Apple??I am sure I am not the only one who has <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">wondered lately if they are properly cleaning their fruits and veggies. I am hesitant to admit this, but I have actually washed my apples with dish soap. </span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">I would rather risk soap, than some bacteria. (I just rinsed extremely well). I have also wondered about the veggie rinses available at the local markets. After a bit of research, I have found that vinegar diluted with water is a great home made solution for smooth skinned fruits and vegetables. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">Mix:</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;"> 1 c vinegar to 3 parts water in a spray bottle. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">An apple or pear would require about 6 squirts, and a final rinse of cold water.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">In a study conducted by Cook's Illustrated and broadcasted by NPR, @ http:/www.npr.org, in a piece titled "What Does It Take to Clean Fresh Food", they found the vinegar rinse to be the most effective of the 4 techniques they tried:</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">1. Anti bac soap- not recommended. (I never used anti-bac)</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">2. Vinegar rinse (above recipe) & cold water rinse to follow. Removed 98% of the bacteria, in about 30 seconds.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">3. Scrubbing fruit with a scrub brush. Removed 85% of the bacteria. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">4. Cold water rinse. Water can remove 98% of bacteria if used to rinse and soak the produce.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;">This can be an effective solution for not so smooth produce. You could even add vinegar to the soak. One of my favorite friends introduced me to this stovetop potpourri, it is amazing!</div>

<div>
1 orange- cut up</div>
<div>
3-4 cinnamon sticks </div>
<div>
2-3 bay leaves</div>
<div>
1/4-1/2 cup whole cloves</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Add above ingredients to a saucepan, with plenty of water. Bring to a boil. </div>

Reduce to simmer. Add water as needed! You can mix it up depending on the season. A citrus variety is great for Spring/ Summer. This is also a great gift. I put everything in to a cellophane bag, (just leave the orange whole). be sure to include the instructions. </div>

Enjoy!</div>

Always leave the washer lid/door ajar. We don't want a dark, damp environment in our washers, not to mention the odors that come with it. If your washer has a less than pleasant odor, run the washer empty, on hot and add 1 cup vinegar. I do this occasionally regardless, in my dishwasher also. The vinegar cleans the<br />

How is it August?? </div><div>I am still making, using and selling laundry soap, I just haven't attended many Farmer's Markets ... at least as a vendor. </div><div>It has been a busy year! </div><div>Our son, Rex returned in April, from serving a two year mission for our church , The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served in Russia. His return brought much enthusiasm for places like Disney World, Jackson Hole and just down time together as a family.</div><div><br /></div><div>Our daughter Emiley announced her engagement to Josh...who is awesome by the way, the same month, so... We had a beautiful July wedding in the Salt Lake City temple. </div><div><br /></div><div>School is now back in session, and I have been contacted by some of my favorite long distance friends, who are wondering why they STILL cannot acquire pure laundry soap with the push of a button. Those of you who know me the best, know exactly why, although I have many creative juices flowing through my body at any given time... I have zero technical ones. I know it is sad. </div><div>I will enlist the help of my sweet, patient husband, or my very technically inclined, and also very patient, sister in law Sarah who has been the master mind of much of what you see on Pure Laundry today, including our new fancy button. Thanks Sarah!!</div><div><br /></div><div>I have decided to offer random laundry tips. I would also love to hear your favorite tips also. Please share!</div><div><br /></div><div>Today's tip:</div><div>Keep a bottle of your favorite dish washing liquid handy to pre-treat food stains. Just dab a bit on and toss it in the washer.</div><div>I always prefer the brands that do not contain phosphates etc. </div>Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14826836679538957047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-70441464083069003222010-11-02T12:58:00.000-07:002010-11-02T13:09:52.026-07:00"You had better bottle this stuff" ... Well, with maybe 10 days notice, I found out we could participate in the Sweet William Open Air Market in Denver. A chance to test the market and find out if there was any interest in the general public, for this kind of product.<div><br /></div><div>It was a crazy week to say the least. My dear friend("dear friend"- someone who jumps on board with any crazy idea you have and makes it happen) Diane, and her very enthusiastic family, along with my own very supportive family got to work. Looking back it was a blast. It was a learning experience as well. We made a sign. Made lots and lots of laundry soap, and were off. </div><div>It was a VERY hot day, but so much fun!!</div><div>Our best customer so far is an elderly gentleman from Utah. He bought 10 bags, bless his heart.</div><div>Over all we felt it was a success.</div>Nataliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14826836679538957047noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3062450667340374403.post-2567600971815430642010-09-13T10:16:00.000-07:002012-12-14T15:29:49.367-08:00Why Pure Laundry?I created Pure Laundry for people like me. <br />
A busy mom who likes nice things, who also is concerned with making healthy choices, and takes pride in caring for my family. I wanted a laundry soap that worked well, wasn't full of added fillers and unnecessary ingredients. <br />
<div>
Having moved recently to a new home in the middle of a corn field...with a septic system,<br />
<div>
having also purchased a front loading washer, I wasn't happy with how the laundry smelled.</div>
<div>
My husband had even commented, "our towels didn't smell bad, just not fresh."</div>
<div>
I started experimenting. I discovered many recipes in random books and online for homemade laundry soap. Eventually, we created a recipe we were pleased with. My 10 year old son, who was actively involved in mixing, pouring and stirring... ran to the laundry room. He had his first real lesson in sorting laundry. We did a towel load first. We were thrilled with the results. The true test was when my husband, having used a freshly washed towel, exclaimed, "You had better bottle this stuff, these towels smell amazing!"</div>
<div>
We have enjoyed lots of help and support from dear friends and family. Ultimately, we hope you are as pleased with our product as we are. </div>
<div>
We use the finest ingredients, including 100% pure essential oils. The essential oils help clean and freshen the laundry. They offer other benefits as well. In addition to smelling wonderful, some have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are three scents available:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Citrus-</div>
<div>
Orange- Uplifting and antidepressant. Helps remove stains.</div>
<div>
Grapefruit- Refreshing and uplifting. </div>
<div>
Lemon- Stimulating, helps whiten laundry</div>
<div>
I use this for every day laundry. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lavender- Relaxing and calming. </div>
<div>
This is great for all bedding, pajamas, baby clothes etc.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Peppermint- Purifying, energizing and stimulating.</div>
<div>
I have had terrific results with stinky socks and football uniform.<br />
I use this for almost everything during the month of December, for obvious reasons!!</div>
